PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – While Justin Fields said he is preparing the same and hasn’t been told if he would start on Sunday, by Fields words and body language it seems like Russell Wilson will start at quarterback Sunday for the Steelers.
“I don’t think I’ve played good enough, if I’m being real with you,” Fields said. “If I’m being real with myself. I think if I did play well enough I don’t there would be any sort of ‘who should be playing and who should not’.”
“At the end of the day, we got a few wins. Of course, I’m glad about that. There’s areas that I can be better at, I’m just going to continue to work on those and continue to get better.”
The Steelers were 4-2 when Fields started, he threw for 1,106 yards, 66.3% completion with five touchdowns, one interception and a 93.9 quarterback rating. He also led all NFL quarterbacks with five rushing touchdowns
If they do indeed start Wilson instead of Fields Sunday against the Jets, Fields said he’s been in that situation before and will prepare like a back-up does, being a snap away from playing.
“I will do the same thing I was doing,” Fields said before practice Thursday. “It’s just doing my job at the end of the day. Whether that’s playing, helping the guys out on the sidelines. Helping Russ out, if he’s out there. Small stuff like that.”
Asked if he got out what he wanted from the opportunity to start.
“Not really, I want to be 6-0 right now,” Fields said. “It was a great opportunity for me. Of course, I’m grateful for the opportunity I did get those first six weeks. We’ll see what happens this week.”
He’s not closing the door on his opportunities moving forward, saying you never know what happens over the course of a season. That life is crazy in general. He said the teammates are very supportive and there is love for one another.
Fields quoted scripture in how he deals with adversity specifically in a passage from James where he said you find pure joy in trials and tribulations because in the end it’s going to make you persevere more. He said he tries to have gratitude for what he has, but at the same time, not be complacent.
There have been a lot of ups and downs for Fields with the Steelers, and we’re only six games into his career here.
