PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Steelers are talking to a former quarterback under Mike Tomlin, but maybe not the one you thought.

CBS Sports reporting Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson will interview to be the next Steelers offensive coordinator.

Johnson was part of the biggest turnaround in the AFC this year coaching CJ Stroud with the Houston Texans. Previously he was the assistant quarterbacks coach with the Vikings in 2022 working with Kirk Cousins as he threw for 4,547 yards and 29 touchdowns. Johnson started his NFL coaching career as an offensive quality control coach with the Colts from 2019-21 as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. His first coaching experience was in high school in Houston.

Along with time in the offseason and training camp with the Steelers in 2012, he also spent time as a quarterback in the NFL with Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson in Seattle, Jay Cutler and the Bears along with brief periods with Joe Flacco and the Ravens and Jason Garrett, Tony Romo and the Cowboys. He never played in a regular season game.

The 35-year-old played in 37 career games at Texas A&M from 2006-10 throwing for 8,011 yards and 67 touchdowns leaving the Aggies as the school’s all-time leader in yards and TDs along with attempts and completions.

Steelers have previously interviewed Carolina first-year offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and requested an interview with Rams quarterbacks coach Zach Robinson who may become the OC in Atlanta.
