PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Whether the season continues in the playoffs or ends at home depended on one kick. What the Steelers reactions were to Tyler Loop missing a 44-yard field goal wide right when ended a 26-24 Steelers win?
After the Steelers had taken the lead with one minute to play, kicker Chris Boswell missed the extra point. That made it a two-point margin and allowed for the Ravens to win the game with a field goal.
Baltimore got a big kickoff return and were poised to win the game. The play before the kick, Lamar Jackson took a knee so the ball would be spotted exactly where the kicker wanted it. Loop was about to complete an amazing comeback from the Ravens being 1-5 on the season to win the AFC North. But he missed wide right.
“I was sitting there, I was at an angle where I couldn't really see the kick, but I heard the fans going crazy,” said linebacker Alex Highsmith. “We just started jumping up and hugging everybody, so it's a good feeling.”
“A lot of emotions, couldn't believe we were in that position,” said quarterback Aaron Rodgers. “Hope he doesn't make it.”
“You know, it's always kind of you watch the kicker -- I was watching Ben (Skowronek) too because he was trying to block it. You know, you're watching the kicker and the ball just seemed to be heading right to start, so it's chaos, disbelief, gratitude, a lot of emotions.”
“Just really thankful.”
“I was sitting there talking to Jaylen (Warren) and Jaylen said he wasn’t going to watch,” said running back Kenneth Gainwell. “I was like I’m going to watch for you. I said he’s going to miss it and he missed it and it was on from there.”
“I was out there for it, so I saw it,” said linebacker TJ Watt. “Obviously just really excited. Any time you can win a football game, especially with two historic franchises, feels like every time we get together we’re talking about just those legacy type plays. Glad we were on the winning end of it this time.”
“I did not watch anything,” said linebacker Patrick Queen. “I don’t know who, but one of the linemen was like ‘he missed. He missed. He missed’. I was in shock.”
“I was super nervous, super anxious,” said tight end Pat Freiermuth. “I saw some Tweet earlier that a priest blessed the field, so I think that worked.”
“The good Lord made a good decision tonight,” said captain Cam Heyward. “I am thankful and we keep moving on.”
