Report: None of Tomlin’s assistant coaches will be back in 2026

According to the Post-Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, all of Mike Tomlin’s assistant coaches have been informed they won’t be back in 2026.

Dulac says that “they are free to pursue other opportunities”, and that the only way they will be back is if they new head coach wants to rehire them.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is reportedly interviewing for a few of the opening head coaching positions available this offseason, including the Titans, where he was their former OC.

Smith has also reportedly been requested by the Lions for their open OC position.

Several insiders speculated that defensive Teryl Austin had likely coached his last game with the Steelers, even before Tomlin announced he was stepping down.

The moves would also mean the end for longtime coaches like special teams coach Danny Smith and defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.

Dulac says the coaches are all under contract through the end of February.

The Steelers are scheduled to conduct their first interview for head coach on Friday with Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
