PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – For the 11th consecutive season and 13th time in his career, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger named a Steelers captain.
To give you an idea of how long Roethlisberger has led this team, the other three captains his first year named in 2008, Hines Ward, James Farrior and Jeff Reed, have all been retired for a decade or more.
While not as long, Cam Heyward named defensive captain for the seventh straight season. Heyward took over as captain from recently inducted Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Polamalu.
It’s the second year a Watt has been named captain. Last year TJ Watt shared it with Cam Heyward. This season brother Derek is the special teams’ captain. Derek Watt is the fifth different captain in the last five years on special teams. He follows Jordan Dangerfield, Roosevelt Nix, Chris Boswell and Robert Golden.
Captains are voted on by the players.
