Schefter: If Fields outperforms, Steelers could cut Wilson

The Steelers quarterback room transformed from Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky to Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, seemingly overnight.

But, is there a chance that Wilson never even steps on the field for Pittsburgh when it starts to count?

ESPN's Adam Schefter is considered the most plugged-in NFL insider by most. So, when he says something, you can't ignore it.

Speaking on "NFL Live", Schefter said that Wilson will go into Training Camp as the #1 with Fields #2, but that things could change as the preseason goes on.

"When you talk to people around the league, the thinking is, they don't have much invested in either player," said Schefter. "So, if they felt like Russell Wilson wasn't picking up the offense, wasn't adapting, they felt like they were better off with Justin Fields, they only have a $1.2 million investment in Russell Wilson, it's not very much."

With the Steelers paying for only a small fraction of Wilson's salary, Denver is paying the majority of it, Schefter is hearing that if the Steelers like Fields better, Wilson could be benched or even released."

Chris Mueller said on "The PM Team" Wednesday that it seems a little excessive that the Steelers would do that.

"The idea that he would be dismissed from that job before he even played a down of meaningful football feels like an extreme thing," said Mueller.

Mueller adds that he doesn't think that Fields has proven himself enough to show he can take the team over confidently without having Wilson as an option, even if Fields does impress more during the preseason.
