PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – While Avery Williamson says linebacker Robert Spillane won’t need surgery, the knee injury is bad enough that Spillane was placed on the Reserve/Injured List Saturday.
Spillane had started the last seven games, hurt his knee in the third quarter in the loss to Washington. Following the injury to Devin Bush, the undrafted Spillane and had 43 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, a pair of sacks, a fumble recovery and a pick six.
Steelers added a pair of linebackers, Ulysees Gilbert from IR due to a back injury on November 4 and Tegray Scales from the practice squad.
Gilbert played in a pair of games this year, getting 14 defensive snaps before his back injury against the Ravens. The six round pick from last year has played in nine NFL games, mostly on special teams.
Scales has traveled since named a first-team All-Big 10 linebacker at Indiana. He career started with the Colts in 2018, only to be released on cut day, similar fate with the Steelers last year. Scales signed with the Tampa Bay practice squad in October and signed back with the Steelers two weeks after the Bucs released him on November 11. While playing in the XFL, Scales hasn’t played a down in the NFL.
