PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers end what Tomlin calls the 'rev-up' portion of training camp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on the South Side on Sunday. They are dealing with a couple of injury questions.
Tomlin said he is excited about where projected starting tackle Zach Banner is recovering from ACL surgery. Center JC Hassenauer is day-to-day after an injury on Saturday and Tomlin said to ask him after practice on Tuesday for an update. Starting slot corner Antoine Brooks, Jr. left practice with an injury, but Tomlin confirmed it was not serious.
Rookie center Kendrick Green returned from a day off as did offensive lineman BJ Finney who left Saturday with an injury.
Camp now moves to Heinz Field on Tuesday for a closed workout and then the fans arrive on Wednesday.
"That kind of signifies the start of training camp if you will," Tomlin said of moving venues. "We will turn the volume up. We are going to have an opportunity on Wednesday to perform in front of fans. We are excited about that element of the training camp process. We are excited to put pads on."
Not that what they did since Thursday's first practice doesn't matter.
"We got a lot of good work done out here," Tomlin said. "Laid some foundational things, established some codes of conduct. Familiarize them with the schedule and how we work not only on the field, but in the classroom. Good use of that time. Guys had an opportunity to learn and display that learning and make some plays. We look forward to that continuing and expect it to."
Tomlin said rookie tight end Pat Freiermuth is 'working hard and on the details', same with tailback Najee Harris. Warning it all changes when they get together next.
"Football in shorts, we don't put a lot of stake in," Tomlin said Sunday. "As they put the pads on we are excited to see what they bring."
