American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson tested positive for marijuana use and may not be able to compete in the Olympic competitions in Tokyo this month, according to sources who briefed Reuters.
The positive test came last month during the U.S. Olympic trials, per Reuters. Richardson ran the 100-meter race in 10.86 seconds, proving herself to be a formidable opponent.
That test result would invalidate her victory last month along with any other results. Another female track athlete has already been approached to run the 100m event in Tokyo, said another Reuters source.
Richardson posted a tweet Thursday, writing: “I am human.”
She is scheduled to appear on NBC’s Today Show Friday morning, the network said.
The track star intended to run in the 200m race at the Diamond League in Stockholm this weekend but reportedly would no longer participate when her name did not appear on the website.
Sha’Carri Richardson had hoped to become the first American woman to win a gold medal in the 100m Olympic competition since 1996 when Gail Denvers ran a 10.72 time.
