PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Coming into last season 22-25 in five years as head coach, the question with Neal Brown was if he would make it through the season. Now West Virginia has signed its football coach to an extension through 2027 after a 9-4 year.
The momentum started with grinding out a 17-6 win in the Backyard Brawl and continued with wins at TCU, Central Florida and Baylor in 2023. It concluded with a Duke's Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina.
"I am pleased with the progress I've seen in our football program since arriving last year," said West Virginia University Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker in a statement released by the school. "I believe this contract amendment allows us to continue to build on our momentum as we begin our first year in the new and expanded Big 12 Conference. I'm appreciative of the effort Coach Brown and his staff put into developing the young people in our program both on and off the field."
Brown will begin his sixth year with the Mountaineers, 31-29 overall with a pair of winning seasons-last year and 6-4 in 2020.
"My first priority was retaining and rewarding our assistant coaches and support staff who have played such a critical role in our success," Brown said in a statement released by the university. "I appreciate Wren's support on that front as well as his continued commitment to me and what we are building. We share a common vision for this program and that alignment is critical to our continued success. There are great things ahead, and I can't wait to see our incredible fans back in Milan Puskar Stadium on August 31."
West Virginia opens 2024 at home against Penn State on that Saturday and will play at Pitt two weeks later. WVU has other home games with Albany, Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State, Baylor and UCF.
