The same day that the Steelers announced they would not be renewing the contracts of offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, offensive line coach Shaun Sarrett and defensive backs coach Tom Brady, it appears they are working to keep defensive coordinator Keith Butler in Pittsburgh.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that a new contract is being discussed that would keep Butler in Pittsburgh at least one more year.

Fowler adds that the plan for the 64-year-old Butler is to go year-to-year.

The Steelers maintained a top three defense during the season, forcing 27 takeaways, second only to Miami.

But with nearly 10 first round draft picks on the defense, there are those critical of Butler with the defense giving up big plays, at least once a game.

There are also problems on the defensive side including putting linebackers on the oppositions #1 receiver.

Missed tackles also helped the Browns pile on for a 48-37 first round win against the Steelers on Sunday.

The offense didn’t help at all, but the defense did not play up to its normal standard.

To be fair, Butler and the Steelers defense did remain one of the best in the NFL after losing both linebackers Bud Dupree and Devin Bush to knee injuries, with Bush’s replacement Robert Spillane missing a fourth of the season due to his own knee injury.
