Beach Weather were already back before TikTok had its way with them

The return of Beach Weather this year after a close to five-year break ended up working out quite nicely, lining up with the out-of-the-blue emergence of their 2016 hit "Sex Drugs Etc." on TikTok. Now back with new music and live dates, the band joins Megan Holiday to get fans all caught up on their new era.

Beach Weather band members Nick SantinoReeve Powers, and Sean Silverman had already reunited after taking time to work on separated solo efforts before "Sex Drugs Etc." had started trending on TikTok years later. "We finished the record last June," says Nick. "Me and Sean got on Facetime during COVID and just started writing a bunch of songs, and we went out to Phoenix last year, made a record in a week for the hell of it, with the plan of putting it out ourselves a month later. Then, after we were all done, we started hearing, 'hey, 'Sex, Drugs' is kinda doing something,' and we were like, 'really? Why now?'" Sean adds, "once we found out about this we downloaded TikTok to see what it was about."

The forthcoming album, Pineapple Sunrise, which features their new single "Unlovable," came together incredibly quickly both Nick and Sean agree, the latter saying the process was like "a fun science project... we were chaotically adding things just for a week straight, looked up and were just like, 'Oh... the whole thing!'" Nick adds, "we really only thought we would get like three or four songs done... and we ended up getting an entire album."

The break of the pandemic, Nick believes, made each of the members of the band remember why it is they love music in the first place. "It made you shake off all the other crap that maybe held you back from doing it. Then we just looked at it with pure eyes and ears... these songs spoke for themselves when we wrote them and then when we recorded it just elevated it where like, 'something's happening with these songs.' Then for 'Sex, Drugs' to be the one that comes in and goes like, 'hey, here's a song...' It kind of sets up this new record in a perfect way because it's really just a continuation of 'Sex, Drugs.' We even look at our song 'Unlovable' as the big brother song to 'Sex, Drugs.'"
