It’s always 5 o’clock when you’re in lockdown.
Living through a pandemic forced people to find ways to stay entertained indoors, and inspired a new passion for at-home cocktail bartending across the country.
Many people attempted new beverage recipes to create a get-away experience right from the couch. According to Upgraded Points, search interest for “cocktail recipes” in March of 2020 was nearly double what it was in March of 2019.
Google Trends data from March of 2020 through March of 2021 showed that mimosas, a common brunch beverage that combines champagne and orange juice, was the top-searched cocktail in 6 states from Colorado to Maryland.
Other popular libations included piña coladas, wine coolers, White Russians, margaritas, and mojitos. These worldly drinks bring the travel experience right to people's home.
While some of the choices were obvious, there were a number of surprises as well. Nevadans searched for Shirley Temples and Wyoming took things up a notch with Long Island iced teas.
During the summer months, the most popular cocktail option was a Painkiller, a fruity drink that combines pineapple and orange juice, coconut, and rum. During the cold winter months, many people turned to vodka, lime, and ginger beer to enjoy the classic Moscow Mule.
