After being MIA from Instagram for about six weeks, Spider-Man star Tom Holland made a brief return to share that he's been on a mental health break — and he anticipates it's one that will continue for some time.
In the three-minute video he posted on Instagram, Holland revealed, reading comments on "Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming.”
He continued, ”I get caught up, and I spiral when I read things about me online. And, ultimately, it's very detrimental to my mental state, so I decided to take a step back and delete the app.”
In addition to taking this last opportunity to update his fans on his continued social media absence and how social media has impacted his mental health, Holland also used his brief return to reach out to those who who might also be struggling as well, and provide helpful outlets for them to utilize.
"Hello and goodbye... I have been taking a break from social media for my mental health, but felt compelled to come on here to talk about @stem4org," he captioned the video. "Stem4 is one of the many charities @thebrotherstrust is extremely proud to support — and I'd like to take a moment to shine a light on their fantastic work.”
Stem4 is a UK based teenage mental health charity with four apps designed to help ease feelings of anxiety, depression, and the urge to self harm. Holland revealed "I have all of them," downloaded on his phone and encouraged anyone who is struggling to try them out. "I've tried them all, they're all fantastic. They're really helpful.”
As he noted in his caption, writing, "love to you all, and let's get talking about mental health,” Holland's goal in supporting Stem4 and sharing his own story is to help destigmatize the discussion around mental health and get the conversation started.
Thankful to those who took the time to tune in, Tom reiterated that he’d continue to be on a social media hiatus, ending his video by saying, “so again, thank you for listening. I'm going to disappear from Instagram again. And to everyone out there, thanks for your love and support. I love you all, and I'll speak to you soon."
