The Oscars were a dignified end to a buzzy awards season.

But that's not to say they weren't without their surprising moments.

It was a night of firsts for stars and streaming platforms alike on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This, combined with unexpected performances, silly gags, and tribute outfits, made the Academy Awards a fun, memorable show.

These are the standout moments of the 2020 Oscars.

Steve Martin and Chris Rock offer comic relief

While there were no hosts again this year, it wouldn’t be the Oscars without a momentous opening. Following an empowered Janelle Monae performance that kicked off the show, Martin and Rock trades one-liners, taking jabs at Jeff Bezos who in the audience, the Academy’s diversity problem and more.

Brad Pitt wins first Oscar for acting

Brad Pitt took home his first Academy Award for acting, scoring best supporting actor for his performance in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The win comes after the 56-year-old star won the same category at both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes in January. Previously, he won an Oscar for "12 Years a Slave," but as a producer on the film.

Eminem performs the '8 Mile' song

Fans who’ve seen “8 Mile” know Em is a Renaissance man. But while the Detroit rapper held his own on screen in the semi-autobiographical came-from-nothing underdog story, the Academy brought him back to perform the film’s Oscar-winning track “Lose Yourself” following a montage of movie-defining songs. A bizarre and awesome moment was Leonardo DiCaprio on his feet, looking on clapping earnestly after the performance.

Spike Lee's Kobe tribute suit

While the great Kobe Bryant was honored during the award show's in memoriam segment, the best tribute was Spike Lee's. He wore a yellowed-line purple suit — Lakers colors — with 24, Kobe's last jersey number, emblazoned on his lapels.

Netflix wins its first acting Oscar via Laura Dern

Laura Dern became the first actor to win an Oscar for a role in a Netflix film. Dern accepted her award with a touching speech dedicated to her parents, actors Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern.

'Parasite' sweeps 4 categories including Best Picture

When "Parasite" director Bong Joon-Ho accepted the movie's second and third awards, he was first "ready to drink tonight" then clarified "to drink tonight until next morning" on number three. But the real shock came when "Parasite" won Best Picture, the first film to achieve the honor.
