LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The home rental platform Airbnb announced Monday it would be expanding measures to prevent unauthorized New Year’s Eve parties in Los Angeles and throughout the country.
The company first announced in November it would block guests with poor rental-review histories from booking one-night reservations on Dec. 31, as well as last-minute two-night bookings during that period.
On Monday, Airbnb announced it would be extending those limitations to three-night bookings as well.
Last year, when the company put similar restrictions in place, about 243,000 guests worldwide encountered limitations on New Year’s bookings. The same rules were enforced in the U.S. for the July 4th and Halloween holidays.
In 2020, the company instituted a global ban on rental-house parties to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. It appeared New Year’s restrictions placed in late 2021 were unrelated to concerns surrounding the virus, and its new, rapidly-spreading Omicron variant. Strict cleaning protocols from the beginning of the pandemic remain in place, but guests with otherwise positive rental-review histories will not be blocked from renting out homes for multi-person gatherings this New Year’s.
