ANAHEIM, Calif. (KNX) — A 41-year-old Anaheim man wanted in a domestic violence incident involving a handgun was killed by police gunfire early Thursday morning at the end of a six-hour standoff.

Anaheim police were initially called around 9:45 p.m. to respond to a disturbance in the 600 block of South Resh Street. Officers were told a man armed with a handgun was acting erratically and may have fired shots, according to Sgt. Shane Carringer.

Arriving officers made contact with a female witness and determined the suspect was wanted suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and firing at an inhabited dwelling in connection with a domestic violence incident, Carringer said.

Officers tried to make contact with the suspect at the residence and attempted to get him to peacefully surrender while employing de-escalation tactics, Carringer added, but after officers heard an additional gunshot from inside the home, they contacted the department’s SWAT team to respond.

Members of SWAT remained on scene and also attempted to get the suspect to peacefully surrender, but he refused to comply, Carringer said.

Around 3:50 a.m. Thursday, the suspect exited the front of the home and had an altercation with the SWAT team, which is when an officer-involved shooting occurred, according to Carringer.

Officers attempted life-saving measures on the suspect, but he died at the scene, Carringer said.

A functional handgun was recovered at the scene, he added.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is investigating.
