A local attorney is hoping Celtics player Jaylen Brown's dispute with the city of Beverly Hills brings attention to what some feel is discrimination against Black people.

On Valentine’s Day, Brown was holding a gathering in Trousdale Estates. While music was reportedly shut off at 6 p.m., around 7 p.m, Beverly Hills police shut down the gathering, and the city says it was over code violations.

Attorney Brad Gage is not representing Brown, but has other cases pending against Beverly Hills for alleged discrimination.

“What happened on the 14th is what we have seen for many years by Beverly Hills PD, and that is differential treatment towards African Americans by the Beverly Hills Police Department,” he told KNX News’ Emily Valdez.

The city officials apologized to Brown. Brown says he lost money because it was a promotional gathering and is open to a resolution with the city of Beverly Hills.

“That's important because Jaylen is a celebrity, a sports figure, and has the power to help raise awareness and focus on problems that have persisted for over 20 years at Beverly Hills, in which black people have been treated differently,” Gage said.

City officials did not say what the code violations were.
