President Joe Biden shared on Monday during a speaking engagement that former President Jimmy Carter has asked him to deliver his eulogy after he passes.

Biden was speaking during a fundraiser in Rancho Santa Fe, California, when he talked about the relationship he has with the former president, who remains in hospice care. During the speech, Biden appeared to let the former president’s wishes slip.

“He asked me to do his eulogy – excuse me, I shouldn’t say that,” Biden said, CBS News reported.

He continued, saying he “spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him. But they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough.”

Biden was referring to Carter’s health and long battle with cancer. The former president has been fighting cancer for some time, and in 2015 he shared that four spots of cancer had spread to his brain. He was pronounced cancer-free in December of that year after undergoing treatment. However, he has faced numerous health issues since then, including requiring surgery in 2019 to relieve pressure on his brain.

The Carter Center shared last month that Carter had decided to begin receiving hospice care at his home in Georgia after a series of hospital stays for various health reasons.

The Carter Center shared that he had come to the decision “to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”

Biden has been in close contact with the Carter family since he was informed of the former president’s decision and declining health, CNN reported.

Carter, who was the nation’s 39th president, remains the oldest living president in US history and turned 98 last year. His wife, former first lady Rosalyn Carter, whom he started the Carter Center with, is 95 years old, and the two have been married for almost 80 years.
