Healthcare workers in California may have to wait to get their minimum wage increase that was set to begin on June 1.

State lawmakers have voted to push an urgency bill that would delay the first installment of pay raises to July 1. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the initial law to increase the minimum wage for people who provide direct patient care in 2023.

Under the new law, facilities are supposed to start paying between $18-$23 an hour, which could cost the state $4 billion a year. The pay would gradually increase until workers reach the goal of $25 an hour.

The urgency bill to delay the wage increase needs to be passed by two-thirds of the legislature and then signed by Newsom.
