There are plenty of strange items that have washed up on the shores of Texas beaches over the years, but nothing quite like what appeared at Mustang Island State Park last week. A large, dark block was spotted on the beach that some thought could be a treasure chest. However, it ended up being a piece of history, as it was cargo that came from a sunken WWII ship.
Back in 1944, America sunk a Nazi ship dubbed the SS Rio Grande off the coast of Brazil. That ship was carrying supplies such as tin, copper, cobalt and bales of rubber. Now, one of those bales of rubber has reappeared 79 years later, washed up on a beach in Texas.
Officials claim America “fired on the Rio Grande until it sank, sending all its cargo to the ocean bottom where it was resting until recently.” According to Fort Worth Star Telegram, this is not the first time one of these bales of rubber have washed up on shore, as some have appeared in Florida and Brazil as well. Luckily, the cargo never made it to its destination, and now a little piece of history has made it to Texas.
