Cleanup efforts continued in West Hollywood on Friday after a massive water main break flooded some of the streets and opened a sinkhole. LADWP's David Hanson said work could be completed by the end of this weekend.

“So we'd be looking at tomorrow before we're actually doing leak checks,” Hanson, the Interim General Manager for LADWP, said. “If everything looks good, we should be able to backfill and walk away from this by the end of the weekend.”

KNX News’ Jon Baird reported that utility crews were trying to cut out that damaged section of pipe where the water main break happened so they could replace it with another piece.

Hanson said it’s a temporary repair, but the pipe itself is slated for replacement.

“We have a project that's in design right now,” he said. “That project's going to start in 2031.”

The water main that ruptured early Thursday morning and sent a river of water down the street was more than 110 years old. LADWP officials confirmed the pipe belonged to them.

Sheri Lunn, spokesperson for the city of West Hollywood, told City News Service that as of Thursday night, 195,000 gallons of water needed to be removed.

West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman told WEHO Online that around 200 cars were damaged in the flooding.

1010 Palm Ave was impacted by the flooding as water made it’s way into the garage and inside some residents’ units.

LADWP is accepting damage claims, including vehicular damage, in person or online; however, they say it's faster to file a claim with your insurance company first.

As for what caused the water main to break, that’s still under investigation.
