Alzheimer's and related diseases will reach new highs for economic impact on care due to overlooked spending on people with dementia and those providing their care.

According to a study by USC Mann School of Pharmacy, over $220 billion goes to medical costs. People living with dementia and their caregivers lose combined wages of $23 billion.

This affects a significant number of people in the U.S., where an estimated 5.7 million Americans live with dementia.


Over five million dementia patients are stricken with Alzheimer's and related diseases in the prime of their working years, but new therapies are slowly emerging to combat it.

The Food and Drug Administration approved blood tests as part of an effort to detect Alzheimer's before people show symptoms.
