Firefighters responded to a blaze inside a cold storage facility in Boyle Heights.

The fire began at about 2:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of South Los Palos S., according to NBC Los Angeles.

An ammonia leak has been reported inside the building, prompting continued shelter-in-place orders, according to Fire Chief Jaime E. Moore. This leak caused LAFD crews to pull away from the structure and call water-dropping helicopters, where the fire's black clouds have turned white.

The shelter-in-place order has been issued for areas east of Genasys LFD Zone 1279 due to hazardous materials, according to LAFD. Click here for the latest on shelter-in-place orders.

“If sensitive to health issues, go indoors. Close all doors and windows and limit outside activities. Limit exposure to outdoor air,” according to the LAFD. This includes an urge to shut off the air conditioning.

Retired LAFD Battalion Chief Steve Ruda urges caution with this rare instance of helicopters dropping water onto an urban building, as the weight of the water could collapse the roof.

Councilmember Jurado, the representative for Boyle Heights, says their office is monitoring the fire closely.

There are no reports of injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
