
In separate cases, two of the world’s biggest tech giants have been ordered to pay billions of dollars in fines over cases in Europe.
The European Union’s top court denied an appeal by Google over a ruling that they violated antitrust rules, upholding a fine of $2.7 billion.

Meanwhile, Apple lost an appeal of a ruling in Ireland dealing with unpaid back taxes, resulting in a $14.3 billion fine.
Regulators in the EU have claimed that Google and Apple’s app stores hurt their customers because they suppress competition, a belief that has led to the legal crackdowns on both corporations.
The cases both date back to the 2010s. Both Apple and Google have exhausted their appeals in the cases.
Google still has two other EU antitrust cases going through the appeals process. Losing those as well would result in over $6 billion more in additional fines.
