LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Alberto Carvalho, superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, has been floated as a likely choice to become the next superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The Los Angeles Times reported that an announcement of Carvalho’s appointment could come as soon as Thursday.
Carvalho has been credited with improving academic performance and instituting school-choice programs in South Florida. The Miami-Dade district’s grade on the state’s evaluation system has risen to an “A” under his leadership.
Other candidates said to be under consideration include Interim Superintendent Megan Reilly, Chief Academic Officer Alison Yoshimoto-Towery, regional administrator Frances Baez, and CEO of Partnership for Los Angeles Schools Joan Sullivan.
Carvalho’s name has been put forward for big public-school leadership positions before. In 2018, he agreed to take the top job in New York City’s public school system, but backed out a day later.
