With National Ice Cream Day once again on the horizon, Americans from coast to coast may choose to celebrate the frozen treat this Sunday. But what flavor will be the flavor du jour?

While certain flavors are popular everywhere, a new report from Instacart shows that the more unique iterations of ice cream have more localized fanbases.

Nationally, vanilla tops the list of favorite flavors with 29% of all Instacart grocery orders during the summer months of 2023 including vanilla ice cream on the shopping list.

Unsurprisingly, chocolate ran second with cookies and cream rounding out the top three.

But it seems regional tastes can dictate who comes in behind those popular scoops.

Moose Tracks led the way in 10 different states including Michigan while the 11 westernmost states are ruled by Rocky Road.

“It’s fascinating to see Rocky Road’s regional popularity in the West, likely fueled by its creation in California during the Great Depression, which gives it a strong regional connection,” Instacart trends expert Laurentia Romaniuk said in the report. “Additionally, its bold and diverse textures perfectly align with the adventurous spirit of the West.”

As for Moose Tracks’ domination of middle America, Romaniuk called it “another ice cream with strong regional roots, having been created in Michigan. The delectable mix of vanilla ice cream, peanut butter cups, and fudge perfectly matches the hearty food culture of the Midwest.”
