MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (KNX) — Authorities Saturday were investigating a high-speed chase that ended in a fatal crash in Riverside County.

Deputies intercepted a Nissan Sentra that had evaded Menifee police during a pursuit shortly before noon Friday near Perris Boulevard and San Michelle Road in Moreno Valley.

The Nissan was traveling northbound on the wrong side of Perris Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it sideswiped another car near John F. Kennedy Avenue. The Nissan further swerved in and out of traffic to pass between vehicles, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The vehicle ran over a spike strip laid down by a deputy, but continued speeding north, eventually entering Cactus Avenue against a red light. It was then the Nissan slammed into the passenger side of a Toyota Tundra headed eastbound, causing both vehicles to collide with a brick wall at the intersection’s northeast corner.

The suspect and Nissan driver, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Toyota were taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries.

The California Highway Patrol was handling the investigation as of Saturday evening.
