LOS ANGELES (KNX) – An investigation was ordered by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as to why a three-month old puppy was accidentally euthanized before an attempt was made to find it a home.
According to a motion by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn, a puppy named Bowie, was "erroneously" euthanized by a county Department of Animal Care and Control employee at the county's Baldwin Park Shelter earlier this month.
During the public comment portion of Tuesday’s meeting, one woman said that “a volunteer video showed that this dog was terrified and shaking in a cold concrete kennel,” and that 22 other dogs were killed the same day as Bowie.
The motion said that despite policies put in place by the county, "many animals are not being successfully placed with viable adopters or rescues."
"Over 12,000 animals that entered the county's care, close to 4,000 were euthanized," Solis said.
“Now let’s face it, all the animals are innocent,” Hahn said during the meeting. “They’re our responsibility and their lives depend on us.”
A report is expected next month as to what happened to Bowie. In addition, supervisors are also asking for a five-year plan to drastically cut the euthanasia of animals every year.
