254 ducks are in Los Angeles County animal shelters after the truck driver who was transporting them died on the side of the 5 Freeway near Gorman on Wednesday.
The ducks were originally headed to a slaughterhouse. Photos show they were tightly packed into crates in the back of a box truck. California Highway Patrol contacted animal control to get the ducks.
“They are in our care technically. There are still owners to the birds, which they haven't come forward yet,” Chris Valles, with the L.A. County Animal Care and Control, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez.

He said three of the ducks had to be euthanized due to injuries, and the others were taken to several shelters.
L.A. County Animal Care and Control knows a San Francisco slaughterhouse owns the birds. The company has 10 days to claim the ducks. If they don’t, the lucky ducks will be up for adoption.
