Alleged stabbing suspect shot by police in Westlake District

A suspect who allegedly stabbed and critically injured a man in the Westlake District Tuesday was shot by police and taken to a hospital.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, around 11 a.m., a detective was driving in the area of Olympic Boulevard and Alvarado Street and "saw an assault with a deadly weapon in progress," which led to the police shooting.

"The suspect, described as a male adult, was struck by gunfire and taken into custody," according to the LAPD. A knife was recovered at the scene, police said.

The suspect and the victim were both taken to a hospital, with the victim listed in critical condition.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman said its personnel took a 42- year-old man in at least serious condition to a hospital, and another person was also transported.

Police said the suspect was being treated for a gunshot would and was considered stable. No officers were injured.

A man broadcasting live from the scene on the Citizen app, Jibriel Rabinowitz, said he witnessed the police shooting. He said that according to other people at the scene, two men were chasing each other when one of the men stabbed the other. The suspect was then shot by police, he said.

A Metro bus was stopped at the scene of the shooting, but a Metro spokeswoman told City News Service the bus was uninvolved in the incident, and neither man connected to the stabbing and shooting were ever aboard the bus.

Other Metro buses were detoured around the area while the investigation continued.
