Gascón was elected in the wake of the George Floyd protests in 2020 on a platform of criminal justice reform and police accountability. Since then, he’s faced two failed recall attempts from critics who blame his progressive policies for a perceived rise in crime.
“Fearmongering has worked for years, and there has not been a shortage of fearmongering during this campaign,” Gascón told KNX News in March. “The numbers are what they are. The reality is, crime is going down.”
Hochman, who ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate for California Attorney General in 2022, has called Gascón’s policies “pro-criminal.” During a KNX News-L.A. Times debate, he said he would reject his opponent’s “extreme blanket policies.”
