OC residents must have proof that a detached catalytic converter is theirs

As of Tuesday, it's illegal in Orange County to have a catalytic converter that's not attached to your car without proof of ownership.

“So the new county ordinance is that if you possess one detached catalytic converter without documented proof of lawful ownership, then that is now a crime, OC Supervisor Katrina Foley told KNX News Emily Valdez. “ The burden shifts to the person with the possession to show that they lawfully own this catalytic converter, as opposed to what the state law has [which] the burden is on the officer.”

Foley said the new law only covers unincorporated areas, which is much of South Orange County, but the sheriff's office is going to work with each city to enact similar laws.
