Los Angeles (KNX) - A new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll finds Rick Caruso catching up to Karen Bass in the L.A. mayor's race.

Rep. Bass leads 34 to 31 among all registered voters. That is down from a 12-point lead in August.

So, what impact, if any, do the new numbers have? Raphe Sonenshein, the Executive Director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State L.A., joined KNX 'In Depth' to discuss what this might mean for the election's outcome.

Rahpe told KNX that Caruso's team and access to money have proven valuable in tightening up the race but most elections get closer toward the end, saying, "they tighten, and the underdog usually gains ground," so this shift is not entirely unexpected.

Despite the dip among all registered voters, Bass is still up by 15-points among likely voters. Raphe said, "Generally speaking, at this stage, pollsters like to focus on the likely voters, rather than all registered voters, many of who will not turn out."

Bass is also up by almost 40 points among likely voters who are registered democrats - they make up the largest voting base in L.A., according to Raphe.

Regardless of the numbers, Raphe isn't ready to call this election over just yet, "He's [Caruso] got his work cut out for him...but a lot happens in the last four-five weeks."
