Nearly 9,000 people face public safety power shutoffs Monday as Southern California Edison monitors high winds and elevated fire danger. PSPS are called during dangerous weather conditions, when fire-prone areas are most at risk, the utility said.
The warning comes as the National Weather Service issued a high wind advisory from 11 a.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, warning of 30-40 mph west winds and gusts up to 65 mph in the Western and Eastern Mojave Desert and Morongo Basin.
Already high winds have led to a dust storm in the Antelope Valley region, prompting California Highway Patrol to shutdown the 14 freeway from Avenue I to Avenue A in Antelope Valley.
A majority of customers facing shutoffs reside in Los Angeles County, where more than 5,490 customers are in areas where a PSPS is being considered. 3,173 customers in Ventura County and 326 customers in Kern County are also in consideration zones, according to the SCE's PSPS map.
The areas include portions of Simi Valley, Chatsworth, Piru, Castaic and the Santa Monica Mountains west of Calabasas. Click here to enter your address in SCE’s map and see if your address is in an affected area.
In addition to areas being considered for safety shut ffs, SCE has provided the addresses of several community resource centers, where customers can go to find water, snacks and air conditioning in the event of a shutoff.
