Los Angeles (KNX) - Will spending more money win you an election?

Based on his current $17 million T.V. ad blitz, L.A. mayoral candidate Rick Caruso believes it can't hurt to try.

As he continues to trail in the polls behind his opponent Rep. Karen Bass, Caruso is banking on the fact that roughly 25% of L.A.'s registered voters are still undecided.

Despite many people claiming advertisements do not sway them, political science professor Matt Lesenyie tells KNX 'In Depth,' this isn't entirely true, as research suggests ads do work, to some degree.

So, this must mean Caruso's spending is a clever political tactic, right? Not necessarily; too much advertising could harm his campaign, says Lesenyie.

Voters "will be exhausted by all the political ads they see, but in particular, by Caruso - he's gonna be wall-to-wall," Lesenyie told KNX.

What's more, seeing Caruso spend millions of his own money for a job whose salary won't come close to replenishing the funds could raise some eyebrows- leaving people wondering about his motives for running.

Listen to political science professor Matt Lesenyie discuss the pros and cons of Caruso's aggressive spending plan above.
