RIVERSIDE, Calif. (CNS) — A brush fire erupted Thursday in the Santa Ana River bottom between Jurupa Valley and Riverside, blackening two acres as crews worked to encircle it.
The blaze was reported about 3:40 p.m. near the Mission Inn Avenue bridge, just north of Mt. Rubidoux, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
Multiple city and Riverside County Fire Department engine crews converged on the location within minutes, encountering slow-moving flames in thick vegetation, according to officials at the scene.
No homes or other structures were immediately threatened.
As of 4 p.m., the blaze was holding at roughly two acres, but there was no containment.
The fire broke out less a half-mile from where another river bottom fire scorched close to three acres on Wednesday. That blaze was determined to be caused by cooking or other fires within a homeless encampment.
It was not immediately clear what ignited Thursday's blaze.
