Student and community groups rally as LAUSD strike deadline looms

While the Los Angeles Unified School District has reached a deal with the teachers’ union and the administrators’ union, they have yet to strike a deal with the union representing school staff.

SEIU Local 99, which represents teachers’ assistants, bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, and staffers, wants a significant pay increase.

On Monday, some student groups and local community groups rallied outside the Roybal Learning Center to urge district officials to meet the union’s demands.

“It takes more than teachers to shape education,” one student said. “Counselors, nurses, principals, administrators, and service workers are all crucial to the development of someone's education. And we're demanding that LAUSD meet the demands of SEIU Local 99, and we are demanding that our educators and staff get the support that they need and they deserve.”

“It's a simple thing,” one man said. “You can do the right thing, and you can do the proper thing, and the proper thing is to meet the demand of SEIU 99.”

If a deal is not struck, the teachers and administrators say they will walk off the job on Tuesday to support SEIU Local 99. This means schools will close for 400,000 L.A. school kids
