Despite being under hospice care for three months, former President Jimmy Carter is said to be doing well at his Georgia home, with his family sharing he still visits with them regularly and continues to enjoy his desserts.
The 98-year-old former commander-in-chief is spending time at his home with former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, 95.
According to their grandson Jason Carter, the two host family members, receive updates from The Carter Center, and enjoy regular servings of ice cream, with peanut butter being his flavor of choice.
“They’re just meeting with family right now, but they’re doing it in the best possible way: the two of them together at home,” Jason Carter told The Associated Press during an interview Tuesday.
When it comes to what’s getting the Carters through this time, Jason Carter said they are leaning on their faith.
“They’ve been together 70-plus years. They also know that they’re not in charge. Their faith is really grounding at this moment,” he said. “In that way, it’s as good as it can be.”
Carter began receiving end-of-life care in February after a series of hospital stays for different health concerns. Since then, he has spent his time at his Plains home, where he lived in 1962 when he was first elected to Georgia’s state Senate.
In the last three months, those around the country, and even the world, have shared tributes for Carter, something his grandson says the former president has been grateful to see.
“That’s been one of the blessings of the last couple of months,” Jason Carter said. “He is certainly getting to see the outpouring, and it’s been gratifying to him for sure.”
While President Carter and Rosalynn are well known for their time in office and humanitarian efforts, Jason Carter says that at the end of the day, they are “just like all of y’all’s grandparents.”
“I mean, to the extent y’all’s grandparents are rednecks from south Georgia,” he joked. “If you go down there even today, next to their sink they have a little rack where they dry Ziplock bags.”
