Trump leads in polls, but there are ‘cracks in foundation’, expert says

Former President Donald Trump is set to appear in a Washington D.C. court Thursday for felony charges in connection to his attempt to overturn the 2020 Presidential Election.

His previous two indictments - the first in March and the second in June - led to a significant boost in donations to his presidential campaign.

What could the third indictment mean for Trump’s spot in the polls?

A U.C. Irvine professor Tony Smith said the biggest loser in the Republican primary polls isn’t Trump, but rather his opponent, Florida governor Ron DeSantis.

“He’s got to figure out how to get indicted or he’s gonna have no shot at getting away from Trump,” he said.

Brad Bannon, a Democratic political consultant, told L.A. Morning News that Trump is the front-runner, but it’s too early to call him the leader of the G.O.P nomination.

“If you look at the national polls or you look at polls in California, Trump has a very big lead in the Republican presidential contest,” He said. “But primary poll numbers are as ephemeral as rainbows, they look great while they're out, but they don't last very quickly, and if you look closely at the polls that show Trump with a big lead, you can see crack[s] in [the] foundation.”

Bannon cited a PBS poll that found that “more than half of the Republican primary voters think he did something wrong in terms of his trials and tribulations.”

Although he didn’t specify which poll, a poll released on July 28 found that 41% of Republicans think Trump has done “something unethical.”

He added that when it comes to the Democratic party, the best thing for them to do is to “let Trump stew in his juices.”

“I think Democrats are better off making a strong case about the strong improvements in the economy under Joe Biden. Democrats need to tend to their own knitting because Trump gets himself in enough trouble to hurt both parties,” he said.

Bannon also said Trump’s legal issues are “just a symptom of a larger problem that Americans have with the direction of the Country.”

A New York Times/Sienna College poll released Aug.1 pointed to another possible match between President Joe Biden and Trump.
