Former President Donald Trump seemed to mock former President Jimmy Carter and his legacy as commander-in-chief on Monday night following his Iowa Caucus victory.
“My wife attended the funeral two months ago of Rosalynn Carter. And it was beautiful. Jimmy Carter was there,” Trump said. “I thought to myself, Jimmy Carter is happy now because he will go down as a brilliant president by comparison to Joe Biden.”
Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, is 99 and in hospice care, but while he first served as president almost 50 years ago, he is only 22 years older than Trump at 77.
His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November at the age of 96, and every living former first lady attended the funeral, including Melania Trump. Former President Clinton was also in attendance.
The comments about Carter were heavily criticized on Tuesday, as Brandon Weathersby, a spokesman for the Democratic advocacy organization American Bridge 21st Century, called Trump “cruel” in a statement.
“Donald Trump has operated the same way his entire four decades in public life,” Weathersby said in the statement. “He doesn’t care who he insults, disrespects, or offends as long as he gets his way in the end. Nothing is sacred or off-limits for Trump, not the dead, not American icons, not even some of our most decorated veterans or the memories of our war heroes.”
