This past weekend I took a trip to New Jersey to visit my daughter Kristin. As the old folks use to say, “I had to lay my eyes on her.” We spent time talking about how I raised her, cooking, going to the food trucks getting sushi and shrimp tacos which was absolutely delicious. We did facials, shopping, and yes she made me get an iPhone so we could face time. We laughed about all the crazy things I use to say to her and her brother like, “swallow your spit,” when they would ask for something to drink. We talked about her journey of becoming an attorney and all the sacrifices that were made to get her there. She expressed how grateful she was for all the encouragement and funds that I poured into her education. We talked about reading scriptures, faith, prayer, fasting, and having a relationship with God. We created memories by taking selfies together, watching movies, sharing our strengths and weaknesses. We discussed the verdict of the Breonna Taylor case and the importance of being aware of our surroundings being a black woman in America. We talked about the fear that I have for her and her brother whenever I am aware that they are out and about, because racism is alive and well. It hurt my soul to have that conversation but I had to do it. We hugged told each other how much we loved one another. And yes we had a few spats along the way. It was one of the best weekends of my life and and I was blessed to have spent it with my favorite daughter, Kristin.
