Mike Brown applauds Kevon Looney, veterans for pushing Warriors to WCF

Mike Brown has a selective memory.

The veteran NBA coach served as the replacement for Steve Kerr (COVID) for the Warriors’ final three contests of the team’s intense Western Conference semifinals matchup against the Grizzlies. But Brown conveniently forgets Game 5, as he joked with 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” on Monday. Listen to the full interview below:

“I only coached in two games,” Brown told hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky. “We went 2-0 in those two games.”

In Game 5 at Memphis, the Warriors trailed by as many as 55 points before the game ended in a 134-95 rout for the Grizzlies, as the hype man taunted Steph Curry with “Whoop That Trick” in the final moments.

In Game 6 at San Francisco, the Warriors rode some huge performances from their veteran championship core, including 30 points from Klay Thompson and 29 points from Curry. For Brown, watching Kevon Looney grab 22 of the team’s 70 rebounds was even more impressive. Looney's huge night helped push the Warriors into the Western Conference Finals for the sixth time in eight years, as the Dallas Mavericks await them Wednesday night at Chase Center.

Heading into Game 6, Curry and Draymond Green lobbied with the coaching staff to start Looney to counteract Grizzlies big man Steven Adams. Looney responded with the best performance of his career.

“To see all of our veteran guys – starting with Loon – step up was absolutely the most amazing thing that I’ve ever been a part of,” Brown said. “One of the most amazing things I’ve ever been a part of. That was really fun to see how engaged Loon was the whole time, he laid it out the whole 35-36 minutes he was out on the floor. Especially playing 15-16 minutes straight. Ah, that was fun.”

Brown also made sure to give a shoutout to the other member of the Dynasty Dubs core – Andre Iguodala – who is still making his impact felt despite being sidelined by a neck injury all series.

“A lot of people couldn’t see it, but Andre Iguodala was freakin’ working his ass off on the bench coaching,” Brown said. “I mean, every timeout he was talking to guys. Even on the floor during the game he’s talking to assistants. A couple of times he came up and talked to me. To know that everybody was that invested in trying to get that win, man that was fun.”
