While the 49ers got through most of their regular season finale in good shape, they weren't unharmed. Defensive end Clelin Ferrell suffered a knee injury that has officially cost him a first career playoff opportunity.
The 49ers confirmed before Saturday's Divisional Round game with the Green Bay Packers that Ferrell would go on injured reserve, ending his season (players must spend four games on injured reserve before they can return).
In his place, San Francisco activated safety George Odum from injured reserve. Odum had been out since the 49ers' Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks with a biceps injury.
Odum confirmed to 95.7 The Game Thursday that he would play against the Packers. He said he rehabbed six days a week while he was out.
The move gives the 49ers a group of Tashaun Gipson Sr., Ji'Ayir Brown, Logan Ryan and Odum at safety. They had been spread thin in past weeks after Talanoa Hufanga tore his ACL, and ensuing quad and knee injuries to Gipson and Brown, respectively.
With Ferrell out, the 49ers activated defensive tackle T.Y. McGill and defensive lineman Alex Barrett from the practice squad. The team's clear weakness is in run defense, where they may hope that one or both of McGill or Barrett can help.
Saturday's game is slated to kick off at 5:20 p.m. Listen live to our pregame coverage here.
