Still licking their wounds from a dismal fourth-place finish in the American League West, a bitter disappointment after last year’s free-agent spending spree on infielders Corey Seager (10 years, $325 million) and Marcus Semien (seven years, $175 million), the Rangers have already had a busy offseason, recently hiring a new manager in Bruce Bochy. With Bochy, a three-time World Series champion with the San Francisco Giants, now signed, sealed and delivered, the Rangers, it seems, have turned their attention to filling the GM vacancy left by Chris Young, who was promoted to club president following Jon Daniels’ midseason firing. While it’s still a fluid situation with plenty of rumblings to parse through, one name has emerged as a leading candidate with Texas said to be heavily interested in Dayton Moore, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Moore was recently let go from his position as Royals President of Baseball Operations, ending what had been a 17-year run in Kansas City (manager Mike Matheny was also shown the door as part of the Royals’ housecleaning efforts). The Royals won a World Series under Moore’s watch in 2015, claiming the American League’s best record that season at 95-67. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had a winning year since, going 443-592 (.429 winning percentage) over his final seven seasons in KC.

As noted by Rosenthal, Moore maintains a close friendship with Young, who spent the final three years of his playing career in Kansas City before beginning his front-office tenure with the Rangers in 2020. If Moore gets the job, he’d be inheriting a loaded farm system (MLB.com ranked them sixth out of 30 teams) led by blue-chip prospects Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker, both of whom starred at Vanderbilt before turning pro in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
