Police say just before 6:00 a.m., a vehicle traveling north on Woodtick Road crossed the southbound lane and struck another vehicle head-on.
The driver of the northbound vehicle, a man in his 70s, sustained critical injuries and later died at an area hospital, according to detectives.
The person in the other vehicle sustained non life-threatening injuries.
Police did not immediately release the names of those involved.
Officers from the Naugatuck Valley Crash Investigation Team are leading the probe.
