
Meriden, Conn./WTIC Radio - Police in Meriden are investigating after they say about 100 headstones were damaged, some irreparably, at a city cemetery.
Around 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, officers received several calls from concerned citizens reporting the damage at St. Patrick's Cemetery on Wall Street.
The officers walked the cemetery where they found headstones and monuments, some dating back to the 1800s, knocked off their bases.
Some of the stones were cracked while others showed gouge marks consistent with the use of a chain or cable, police said.
Police say there were no visible tire marks, leading them to believe there are mulitiple suspects.
Detectives interviewed witnesses and canvassed homes with camera systems in hopes of developing leads.
Indications are the vandalism likely occurred between 8:00 p.m. August 11 and 7:00 a.m. August 12.
