Hartford, Conn./WTIC Radio - The chaos of the holidays can be especially challenging for those with dementia or their caregivers.
The Alzheimer's Association of Connecticut suggests scaling back holiday gatherings.
In addition, Connecticut chapter communications director Kristen Cusato says having smaller dinner tables rather than a large one with lots of people can mitigate noise that may prove unnerving.
And she says try and steer the conversation to happier memories.
"Memories of their wedding, high school or what they used to do for work, those are great things to talk about", says Cusato.
"But if it upsets them, you have to learn to redirect. Kind of a little bit of a think on your feet situation", she adds.
And Cusato says the Alzheimer's Association hotline is staffed 24/7 for those who need assistance.
The number is 800-272-3900.
