Ledyard, Conn./WTIC Radio - The chief of the Gales Ferry volunteer fire department was involved in a two-vehicle crash Monday that sent him and another person to the hospital.
Ledyard police say just before 3:30 p.m., a vehicle driven by fire chief Anthony Saccone, 66, collided with a motorcycle at the intersection of Route 12 and Barry Drive.
According to investigators, a preliminary investigation found the operator of the motorcycle, 27-year-old Kevin Dingman, attempted to pass Saccone on the left as the fire department vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was turning left on to Barry Drive.
The motorcycle rider was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police say witnesses told them Dingman was operating the bike at excessive speeds and passing other vehicles illegally prior to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
