A Hartford police officer shot and killed a suspect who fired at him on Monday afternoon, according to Mayor Luke Bronin.
The mayor says 911 received a call about a vehicle with an armed individual who was threatening others. He says when police pulled that car over at Westland and Barbour streets in the North End, a male suspect got out and fired at the officer, who was unhurt.
After viewing surveillance video of the incident, the mayor says the officer then returned fire, striking the suspect, who died at the hospital. The car's driver sped off.
"I think that it is unambiguously clear that the individual who got out of the passenger side and exchanged gunfire with police raised his arm with a weapon in it before the officer did," says Bronin.
"I am deeply grateful that our police officer is uninjured," added Bronin. "He could very easily have been killed today."
The state inspector general will investigate.
